Abbey of Saint-Jean Orbestier

Rue de l'Abbaye

More informations

Located on the coast at Le Château d’Olonne, Saint-Jean d’Orbestier Abbey was built in the 12th century on the orders of the Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitou, William IX, on an 800-hectare estate.
The recently r e s t o r e d monument stands testament to what was once an important Benedictine monastery between the 12th and 18th centuries.

Like many others, it lived through times of grandeur, prosperity and destruction. Richard the Lionheart contributed to the monastery’s fame by confirming the privileges given to the Orbestier monks by his grandfather and by making the forest of Orbestier his favourite hunting ground.
